About the novella
Brussels, 2019 opens on a Friday afternoon in November. Elena Laurent — director of European private sales at Wesley & Hart, thirty-nine, eight years into a discipline she has built around a flat in Notting Hill and the bed she once shared with the man she did not marry — flies to Brussels to walk the rooms of a dead collector's house.
By Saturday night she is in a suite at the Hôtel Métropole with a man she has known for the better part of a day and made up her mind about in two hours. By Monday morning she has said no to Paris and confirmed, in a way she had not been able to confirm to herself in eight years, the architecture she had been operating.
